We mark the start of this era from the rise of Islam in Iran. Up to
this period of the Iranian history the school of Pahlavani was merely
an academy of physical training. However, with introduction of Islam
to Iran and its school of Shi'sm some four hundred years later during
the Safavid Dynasty, new enriching dimensions were added to Varzesh-e
Pahlavani. These dimensions were philosophy and spirituality of
Islam. Sufism was the medium for these dimensions to express themselves.
The above image shows the famous Seal of Sufism. We will adopt this portrait as the icon representing the traditional Iranian martial arts in the Islamic Era. |
